Handi-Lift recently installed a turning inclined platform lift at 23 Saint Marks Place in Manhattan. We replaced an existing Garaventa Artira wheelchair lift with the same model but with some modifications to the design. The storefront at this location has two stories with stairs going up and down from the street level. This lift serves three levels. This Artira features side loading for 90 degree platform access at the lower landing. The lift turns 90 degrees at the bottom landing and parks underneath the upper stairs. It travels up the lower staircase and turns 180 degrees to go up the upper staircase. The drive box sits next to the top of this staircase underneath the roof of the entrance to the building. The tubes make three 90 degree bends so the drive box can fit between two columns. The drive box we replaced was located under the stairs. When we replaced the lift, we moved the drive box to the top landing to protect it from water damage. The entire lift has a satin gray finish.
This project has a unique mounting design for the towers. Three towers are attached to the tread of the lower stairs. These towers extend to the upper staircase and support the tubes on the upper and lower stairs. The three towers closest to the top landing are mounted to the stringer of the upper stairs. This design keeps the towers on the outside of the railing on the upper stairs.
