Last year, Handi-Lift completed the installation of two, straight inclined platform lifts at the LA Fitness located at One Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza in Manhattan. Both wheelchair lifts are Garaventa Xpress II models. Each lift travels over a run of eight risers. One lift connects the street level to an intermediate landing. The other lift continues down a second flight of steps to the main entrance of the fitness center. The rails for both lifts are tower mounted. Both lifts are finished with custom light brown paint with an anodized effect to complement the sandstone walls and red brick ground.

One Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza is named after the Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld, who served as the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 to 1961. Hammarskjöld played a major role in navigating international conflicts during a tense period of the Cold War. His second term was cut short when he died in a plane crash in the Congo while striving to negotiate peace in Central Africa. Because of the tense circumstances and the political factions involved, many suspect that Hammarskjöld’s death was not an accident. While we may never know the full truth of his death, the Dag Hammarskjöld building stands as a reminder of his commitment to public service.
